STEP TWO: Set Fundraising Goals for Each Person
Go through each person and come up with an amount that you feel is reasonable to ask each person individually. $4,000 becomes a far more manageable number if you break it down like this:

$4,000 divided by 13.1 miles = $300/mile

If you can get 13 people to give you $300 each, you’ll raise $3,900. But, maybe that’s a little steep for your friends and donors. If you ask them to sponsor 1/10th of a mile, that’s just $30.

If you can get 130 people to give you $30 each, you’ll also raise $3,900.

Truth is, you’ll have people who give gifts of all sizes. However, this is where fundraising is a lot like training. You are not able to run the race on day one-you need break down your goal into smaller and more manageable pieces.

As you assign target goals to each person on your list, think in terms of $30 investments.

Note: Here’s a trick to turn a $30 gift into $120. Since your training time is four months long (May-August), you can ask a $30 giver for a monthly pledge of $30 x 4 months = $120. There are a lot of people who would give you $30/month over four months who CAN’T give you $120 today. (This also works at higher levels too. . . make sure all your givers know that they can make monthly gifts and have a greater impact.) Donors can set up a recurring pledge on your www.runforone.org Web site.

Depending on the size of your list and the giving ability of the donors you know, you will probably need somewhere between 25 and 50 givers.
